About:

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, two Chatterton School classes in the Merrick Union Free School District volunteered their time to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the food pantry at Bethel AME Church in Freeport on Jan. 13. Prior to their day of service, the students in Dr. Cinnamon Green’s and Mrs. Angela Kremberg’s classes read biographies of Dr. King that recounted his life and his journey as a civil rights activist in pursuit of a world where everyone is treated fairly. The classes were inspired by Dr. King’s well-known quote, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ As a way to carry on Dr. King’s legacy, the students employed their culinary skills to make 119 sandwiches for community residents in need. Wearing hairnets and plastic gloves, they prepared the sandwiches and packaged them for the local food pantry. “By studying Dr. King’s message and participating in this act of service, the students are learning that helping others is a rewarding experience and should happen throughout the year” said Mrs. Kremberg. Both classes said they felt honored to give back and help others. Dr. Green and Mrs. Kremberg thanked all the parents who donated loaves of bread, jars of peanut and jelly, and zip-close bags to help students experience a day of service and giving.
